Our Heritage
In 1798, Royal London perfumery Bayley’s of Bond Street was visited by Russian nobleman Count Olaf. He requested they create a unique fragrance to dedicate to his love interest Catherine the Great, that was reminiscent of the distinct aroma of the Russian Courts. The fragrance they created was named ‘Eau de Cologne Imperiale Russe’.
In 1921, Cussons Sons & Co. acquire Bayley’s of Bond Street and the acquisition includes many unique fragrance formulas including Eau de Cologne Imperial Russe. Cussons later launched the first Imperial Leather bar soap in 1930 using the fragrance from 1798. With over 100 years of fragrance craftsmanship, our Original Bar Soap has been loved by generations and has become a British icon.
